Erin Gruwell
Hilary Swank plays the English teacher in room 203 who made a rare connection with her sudents and instilled hope into their lives.
Steve Gruwell
Scott Glenn plays the father of Erin who disapproves of her putting in so much time in to her work when her students could care less about their education. Towards the end of the movie he had a change of heart and finally applauded her for making a difference in their lives.
Eva
April Le Hernandez acts as Eva's character who witnessed her father being beaten and arrested in her own home for no apparent reason, and one of her neighbors being shot while waiting on the front porch for her first day off school. Eva testified against her own, the Latinos, for the murder of Sindy's boyriend in a convenient store. She was one of Mrs. Gruwell's most stubborn students but befriended her in the end.
Ben
Ben, played by Hunter Parrish, felt threatened becasue he was the only white student in the class but became friends with them in the end and grew to trust the students as well as they trusted him.
Margaret
The English Department chairman, depicted by Imelda Staunton, who disapproved of any and all of Mrs. Gruwell's plans for her class. She tried to keep Mrs. Gruwell from moving forward with ther ideas by bringing them to the principal's attention but he never sided with Margaret.
Jamal
Actor Deannce Wyatt acts as Jamal who is made fun of in class for his big lips,one student even drew a cartoon emphasizing his lips, but Mrs. Gruwell stook up for him and useit as the basis for lesson on the Holocaust. She related the hurtful cartoon to the ones drawn of the Jews with big noses.
Marcus
Jason Finn plays the character of arcus who was a big influence in the classroom, showed respect for Mrs. Gruwell by calling her "Ma," and requested to escort Miep Gies when she comes to speak to the class.
Miep Gies
Pat Carroll plays the role of Miep Gies who was one of the women who helped hide Anne Frank during the holoast. The studets raised money to pay for her to come speak to their clas. Miep refers to the Mrs. Gruwell's students as heroes.
Sindy
Actress Jacyln Ngan plays the role of Sindy who's boyfriend was shot and killed in a convenient store but she moves past the incident and becomes good friends with Eva.
Victoria
Victoria, played by Giovonnie Samuel , is an honors student who requested to be placed in Mrs. Gruwell's lower level class because he had heard such great things about it.
Scott Casey
Patrick Dempsey acts as Scott who feels neglected and unworthy of Erin because of all her accomplishment, and decides to leave her.
